It's shocking to me that this commentary is even necessary. But apparently there are some people who still question whether Trump's recent disgusting tweets about the four Congresswomen are really racist. So, if you have the tiniest lingering doubt, let me confirm for you. They ARE!! And you don't have to take my word for it.
Here's what the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission--the agency tasked with enforcing federal anti-discrimination law--has to say.
"Ethnic slurs or other verbal or physical conduct because of national origin are illegal if they are severe or pervasive and create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment, interfere with work performance, or negatively affect job opportunities. Examples of potentially unlawful conduct include insults, taunting, or ethnic epithets, such as making fun of a person's accent or comments like,'Go back to where you came from,' whether made by supervisors or by co-workers."
Although I think I am fairly well-qualified to speak on this issue, since I handle discrimination cases for a living, and have done so for the past 20 years. Every day, I listen to the stories of employees who claim they have been harassed and discriminated against by their supervisors or co-workers based on race or ethnicity. And in my years of handling complaints--hundreds of them--I can think of only a handful that involved such blatant, open bigotry! And none where such statements were made in writing in a public forum and repeated on national TV! These are the cases that plaintiff's discrimination lawyers salivate over.
Such statements made by any supervisor in private or federal employment, would find them unemployed in very short order! And they'd likely remain that way. And the employer would be hit with a stiff penalty as well. In other words, such statements are a gross violation of federal law. But, apparently, since these statements were not made by a lowly government bureaucrat, but merely by the one man whose primary task is upholding the Constitution and laws of the United States, and ensuring equal protection for Americans of all races and ethnic backgrounds--we, the American people, are left with no recourse except futile outrage!
And if it wasn't enough to make a statement deemed illegal by our federal anti-discrimination Agency, he compounded his offense by inaccurate and vicious insults. Being someone who can't leave bad enough alone, he uttered the following paean of praise to the countries these, our Representatives, supposedly came from. "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all)...."
Of course, all four Representatives are American citizens and three were born in this country. And...let's see....Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was born in New York, and her mother is from Puerto Rico. Last time I checked, Puerto Rico is still the US! She doesn't even have a foreign family origin. And neither does Ayanna Pressley, whose family origin is solely mainland USA! Unlike, as Stephen Colbert pointed out, "the majority of women [Trump] has wed."
We can't expect Trump to get his facts straight. But nonetheless, it is clear that insulting women for their foreign national origin was not really the point of Trump's tirade. Bigotry based on race and color was the point! As we all know, Melania is an immigrant, but she's one of the "good" immigrants. She's White and from Europe.
Commentators have speculated that these sickening statements are a campaign strategy--to energize and fire up his base for 2020. The thought that that might actually be a GOOD strategy is too terrifying to contemplate. So please, help me ensure his strategy backfires!! Let his appeal to the worst in America energize US to bring out the best in America! Let's show the world that this vile, xenophobic, racist does not represent the real America!
